It is a fully funded scholarship for international students. Applicants must be enrolled in a master’s or doctoral program to qualify for this scholarship. An annual stipend of £17,848 is provided, as well as health insurance and academic development funding up to £2,000, as well as a family allowance of £10,120.

210 million dollars was donated by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to the University of Cambridge in October 2000, the largest single donation ever made to a UK university.
By 2022, Gates Cambridge will provide 80 full-fee scholarships to outstanding individuals from outside the United Kingdom to study a full-time postgraduate degree at Cambridge. There will be approximately two-thirds of these awards available to doctoral candidates, with 25 awards awarded in the US round and 55 in the international round.

Are there any restrictions on who can apply for Gates Cambridge International Scholarships?
The Gates Cambridge Scholarship is available to the following applicants:
- Any citizen of a country other than the United Kingdom
- At the University of Cambridge, you may apply to study one of the following full-time residential courses:
- Dr. Ph.D.
- MLitt/MPhil
- A one-year postgraduate program
Perks of applying:
In addition to receiving a Gates Cambridge Scholarship, the recipient will receive the following benefits:
- Fees for University Compositions
- For PhD scholars, the award is for up to four years (£17,848 for 12 months at the rate in 2021-22; pro rata for shorter courses).
- During the course and at the end, a single economy airfare will be provided
- Immigration Health Surcharge and inbound visa costs
- Depending on the length of your course, you may be able to apply for academic development funding that ranges from £500 to £2,000 to attend conferences and courses.
- Depending on the number of children, the family allowance ranges from £10,120 to £14,440 (2021-22 rate). A partner does not receive funding.
- While on fieldwork as part of your PhD, you are entitled to keep up to your normal maintenance allowance (other fieldwork costs are covered by the University Composition Fee).
- If you need maternity/paternity funding, you can apply to intermit your studies for up to 6 months and continue to receive your maintenance allowance during this time.
- In case of unforeseen hardships, hardship funding is available

The Gates Cambridge Scholarship application instructions are as follows:
- The Gates Cambridge section of the funding application includes admission to a course and a college place.
- Get started by creating an account.
- Your personal information must be filled out
- The following documents need to be submitted:
- How you meet the four main criteria for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship should be explained in no more than 3000 characters (approximately 500 words).
- The CV/resume
- Applicants for PhDs only need to submit a research proposal
- A Gates Cambridge reference is required along with two academic references for admission.

Gates Cambridge Scholarships are not available for the following courses:
- Any Undergraduate degree, such as BA (undergraduate) or BA affiliated (a second BA)
- Business Doctorate (BusD)
- Master of Business (MBA)
- Master of Finance (MFin)
- PGCE
- MBBChir Clinical Studies
- MD Doctor of Medicine degree (6 years, part-time)
- Graduate Course in Medicine (A101)
- Part-time degrees
- Non-degree courses
